Low‐gain adaptive stabilization of semilinear second‐order hyperbolic systems

In this paper low‐gain adaptive stabilization of undamped semilinear second‐order hyperbolic systems is considered in the case where the input and output operators are collocated. The linearized systems have an infinite number of poles and zeros on the imaginary axis. The adaptive stabilizer is constructed by a low‐gain adaptive velocity feedback. The closed‐loop system is governed by a non‐linear evolution equation. First, the well‐posedness of the closed‐loop system is shown. Next, an energy‐like function and a multiplier function are introduced and the exponential stability of the closed‐loop system is analysed. Some examples are given to illustrate the theory. Two Convergence Problems for Monotone Sequences

Eight measures of rate of convergence of monotone sequences of real numbers have been proposed and discussed in a paper by Beyer, Ebanks, and Qualls (Acta Appl. Math. 20 (1990), 267–284). These rates arose in discussions of dynamical systems. In the comparisons of these rates, two problems remained. A complete answer is given to one of the problems and a partial answer is given to the other problem.

Some new classes of stochastic order relations among arithmetic random variables, with applications in actuarial sciences

Recently, Fishbum and Lavalle (1995) and Lefèvre and Utev (1996) have considered some stochastic order relations specific for arithmetic random variables. The present work is concerned with these orderings, together with two other classes of stochastic order relations closely related. First, attention is paid to characterizations and various properties of all these orderings. Then, sufficient conditions of crossing-type for the two new classes of orderings are derived and extrema among discrete random variables are deduced. This is applied in actuarial sciences to obtain new bounds for the classical single life premiums as well as for the probability of ruin in the compound binomial risk model.     

Optimal algebraic multilevel preconditioning for local refinement along a line

The application of some recently proposed algebraic multilevel methods for the solution of two-dimensional finite element problems on nonuniform meshes is studied. The locally refined meshes are created by the newest vertex mesh refinement method. After the introduction of this refinement technique it is shown that, by combining levels of refinement, a preconditioner of optimal order can be constructed for the case of local refinement along a line. Its relative condition number is accurately estimated. Numerical tests demonstrating the performance of the proposed preconditioners will be reported in a forthcoming paper.

本文利用重合度理论研究了一类三阶泛函微分方程方程的2π-周期解的问题,获得了该方程存在2π-周期解的若干新结论,改进推广了有关文献中的已有结果．
